Spelunker’s Quest review

Well, that was pretty weird.

It’s not as weird as Duel In the Snow, which is serious and straight-faced and realistic throughout, with very good attention to detail, except that you’re expected to solve the puzzle with a truly peculiar action.

It’s not surreal, like _Hangover_.

Rather, it’s a Zorklike game where, however, the basic nonsensicalness of Zorklike games is played up to an extreme.

Everything works; as an IF it plays smoothly, but with flaws in the design:  you’re expected to do peculiar things that you wouldn’t normally think of (even in an IF) and that are largely unclued.  There are many unwarned insta-death endings, and you can easily put yourself into an unwinnable state.

On the other hand, the game is short (40 minutes with dallying) and it supports UNDO.  But I didn’t take it seriously — I think I wasn’t supposed to — and largely found it unrewarding.
